Where do rating percentages come from?

Why does 50% plus 30% not equal 80%?
VA generally combines ratings using the whole-person method under 38 C.F.R. § 4.25, rather than ordinary addition.
What is the bilateral factor?
Under 38 C.F.R. § 4.26, qualifying disabilities affecting paired extremities may receive an additional bilateral factor before further combination.
What is TDIU?
Total disability based on individual unemployability can permit payment at the 100% rate when service-connected disabilities prevent substantially gainful employment and applicable requirements are met.
Can VA reduce a rating?
